A perfect day trip itinerary for Utrecht, Netherlands.
Knowing very little about Utrecht, I hoped on a train from Amsterdam took the thirty minute ride to see my friend Harmen who lives there. Here is a great day trip itinerary for the city, or better yet, spend a night so you can enjoy the slower pace of life in Utrecht compared to Amsterdam.
De Haar Castle
The 19th century brick castle feels like something out of a movie, and it should cause it has been used in multiple movies and is frequented by some of Hollywoods biggest starts.
Tickets are 16 euros per adult and parking is 5 euros per vehicle. The tour is self-guided.
In the center of Utrecht sits the unmistakable Dom Tower. Climb the 465 steps to the top of the free standing tour for the best outlook over the city.
Book a ticket online ahead of time, tours book up quickly and can be difficult to get day of. Adult tickets cost 9 euros.
Construction started on the tower at the beginning of 2018 so photos of the outside of the tower unfortunately has scaffolding in it.
Enjoy a beer at one of the Canal side restaurants
I loved the canals in Utrecht. Unlike the Canals in Amsterdam, there are no house boats along the canals in city center of Utrecht. The old storage rooms along the canal have been converted to cafes and bars. A great place to enjoy a beer and some food in the afternoon.
