Hop on a bike and explore away
Amsterdam needs no introduction to most around the world. The name immediately conjures images of coffee shops, the red light district, and city streets full of bikes. The city attracts all types and provides something to everybody. Some key highlights include the Anne Frank House, Canal Tours, Heineken Experience and Windmills in the county. Solo travelers will find plenty of hostels in the city, including some houseboats on the canals. Make sure to look at your hostel cause like many buildings in the city, it could be leaning to one side.
The obvious choice for getting around Amsterdam is by bike! If you are nervous about operating amongst so many other bikes, don't worry, Amsterdam has an incredible tram and bus network. I got a 4 day pass for my time there! Read more about my time in Amsterdam here!
Small University city with a fun vibe
The much smaller town of Utrecht is a short 30-minute train trip south from Amsterdam. The town holds many similarities with the capital including heavy bike usage and canals.
There are a limited number of hostels available around town, otherwise the area can be seen in one day by catching a late train back to Amsterdam. Read more about my time in Utrecht here!
